Oncheonjang shaved pork belly at KRW 3,500, with crisp pickled spring onion as the hook
A daepae samgyeopsal house at 95, Donghyeon-ro 16beon-gil in Geumjeong-gu, between Exits 2 and 4 of Oncheonjang Station. The city has certified it as a fair-price establishment and the certificate hangs on the wall. The room is large with space between tables, so it handles family meals and company dinners without strain.
Shaved pork belly is KRW 3,500 per portion. Despite the name it is cut with some thickness rather than paper-thin, so the texture holds. There is no off smell and the flavour is nutty; putting kimchi and bean sprouts on the grill alongside lets them take up the fat. Wrap it in lettuce with garlic and soybean paste, or dip it in salted sesame oil.
The standard setting brings bean sprouts, kimchi, pickled spring onion, pickled radish wraps, soybean paste, lettuce, and garlic. Regulars single out the pickled spring onion for its firm bite. A self-service bar means you can refill banchan as often as you like. The seafood doenjang stew is loaded with tofu and shellfish for a clean, deep broth, and it really wants rice, so order a bowl per person.
Finish with fried rice. Tell them in advance and they bring sesame oil and seaweed flakes and fry it for you. Open 11:30 to 22:30 Monday through Thursday and Sunday, and 11:30 to 23:00 on Friday and Saturday. Takeaway and group bookings are fine. There is no car park, so use the Oncheonjang Station public lot or the surrounding alleys.
